I. How and why has Galilea been created?

The scarcity of highly qualified engineers in our highly hochtechni engineered society caused numerous discussions at expert conferences which finally led to the creation of Galilea as a education reform project. This project should make it able to react to the needs of a modern society much better and faster.

II. What are the duties and responsibilities of Galilea?

Galilea supports you by the revision of lectures, moduls, modul groups and whole courses having the aim to adapt these to the new needs of economy and research.

That needs also a systematic developing of novel gendersensitive, engineering and natural scientific courses having exemplary character which meet the expectations of the highly technologized society. The first successful example is our pilot course Natural Sciences in the Information Society.

Also we want to be seen as a platform for assimilable projects in the sense of our aims and for women who already work in these fields.

III. Which strategies uses Galilea to reach it's aims?

We use public relations, address presentations at conferences, cultivate contacts to economy, organizations and policy. Also we bring off a netzwork of institutions, initiatives and projects.

IV. Which meaning has Galilea within the TU Berlin?

The Galilea concept shall have exemplary character for the whole university in the long term.

Galilea shall be understood as a building block of the various efforts of the TU Berlin as one of the biggest technical universities of Germany to break new grounds and to take over the nationwide pioneering task of overcoming the "gendergaps" of the courses of natural and engineering sciences.

V. Where is the name Galilea from? What does it mean?

Galilea has been named after Galileo Galilei who has been a very important multidisciplinary scientist of the natural sciences. The imitation of his name shall underline our aim of improving the image of the natural sciences and of increasing the number of students in these fields.

The modified female version shall accent the aim of increasing the number of female students in these fields.
